CCGC has reserved the 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm time slot on Friday, March 12, 2021, for our visit to the museum & gift shop.
The museum showcases the most extensive public collection of minerals from Colorado. Take in over 15,000 square feet of rocks, minerals, fossils and other fascinating Earth Science-related objects. With over 2,500 items on display, you are sure to be amazed and learn something new. Pass through the indoor cave and discover minerals that glow. Gaze at the sparkling Miss Colorado Crown containing over 600 gemstones and 21 diamonds. Marvel at the beautifully restored Irwin Hoffman mining murals. Check out a moon rock collected during the Apollo 17 mission. While there, be sure to pick up a brochure for the Bob Weimer Mines Geology Trail and watch the 10-minute video on the geology of the Front Range.
In additon, weather permitting, you can also walk the one mile Bob Weimer Mines Geology Trail – a self-guided trail that proceeds in a circular route through geologic time and events on the Colorado School of Mines campus. Highlights include fossils (including an authentic triceratops trackway), beautiful rocks, interesting geology (including the type location for the Laramide Orogeny), local history and lore, and scenic views. Sturdy hiking boots are recommended.
Directions to Meeting Place: Meet at 8:15 am at the east end of the Home Depot parking lot in Cañon City. Sign in and receive your museum admissions pass. We will depart promptly at 8:30 am. We will arrive in Golden in time for brunch at one of the many restaurant choices near the Colorado School of Mines campus, then head to the museum for our visit. You need to arrive at the museum between 11:45 am and 12:15 pm and depart around 2:00 pm. Once our time at the museum is done, walk the geology trail at your own pace before heading back home.
Approximate Travel Time from Cañon City (1-way): 2 hours and 30 minutes
What to bring: plenty of water, weather-appropriate clothing, sunglasses, and sturdy shoes.
Vehicle required: Any vehicle OK
Special Considerations: Masks are required. Please keep to the right while in the museum. Restrooms are available in the museum. Water fountains are also available, but are for filling water bottles only.
Parking is metered, so you will need to pay for parking. Do not park in a student parking pass area. There are six fee-based visitor parking spots and two handicapped spots outside of the main museum entrance (the south side of the GRL [General Research Lab] building). Additional fee-based parking is available in the garage on the south side of the museum building. You must pay to use ANY visitor parking space using the kiosk outside the museum.
