Next Meeting: March 10, 2025
Please join us at our next meeting which will be on March 10, 2025. The club meeting is first and begins at 6:00 pm and lasts about 30 minutes. You will have a chance to hear all about the events that are planned, which include field trips and speakers for the upcoming months. Please take part in our monthly silent auction and see the wonderful specimens and books available for your perusal. All proceeds from the silent auction go towards our Jim Meacham Earth Sciences Scholarship. Bidding begins when you walk through the door and usually runs till about 6:50. Come early and mingle with friends and enjoy some refreshments. Dan Grenard will be giving a presentation on Frederic Kessler and his discovery of the Stegosaurus. Dan will take us back in time then bring us forward to where we are today and the journey this Stegosaurus has taken. First we will learn about Frederic Kessler, the founder of our club, who made the discovery while he was a high school teacher at Canon City High School. Then we will learn how this specimen made its incredible journey from our local area to find its new home at what was then, the Colorado Museum of Natural History, and what is now, the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, in 1940. Along the way we will also learn how the Stegosaurus was named as the Colorado State Fossil in 1982. And finally, we will hear how Zach Reynolds and the team at Dinosaur Experience decided around 2015 to bring back a replica of the Kessler’s stegosaurus to Canon City. The problem was that the Stegosaurus fossil bones were in the Kessler skeleton in the Prehistoric Journey exhibit at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and they wouldn’t allow those fossil bones to be touched. How could they make molds and casts? A replica went on the display floor in 2018. How did this happen? Who did it? Dan and JoAnn have been married since 1976 and have been living in Canon City since 1985. He was a geologist in Vernal Utah from 1979-1985 and was the staff geologist for the Royal Gorge Field Office, BLM from 1985 to 2009 when he retired. JoAnn has worked as a realtor the entire time of living here in Canon City and she owns her own real estate business. They are the proud parents of two sons. Chris is a computer programmer working in Denver and he is married to Emily and they recently had their first child. Their other son is Jon Paul who is an electrician that works at Holcim in Florence. Dan has been interested in the stories about local dinosaur discoveries in the Garden Park National Natural Landmark since about 1986. Dan has done various presentations for the CCGC and other entities in the area over the years. Program list for 2025
