Next Meeting:
April 13, 2026
Please join us at our next Canon City Geology Club meeting which will be on April 13, 2026. The club member meeting is first and begins at 6:00 pm and lasts about 30 minutes. You will have a chance to hear all about the events that are planned, which include field trips and speakers for the upcoming months. We are hoping for some help setting up the room before our meeting. This means moving tables and chairs. Many hands make quick work. If you could come early at 5:00 it would be greatly appreciated. Please take part in our monthly silent auction and see the wonderful specimens and books available for your perusal. All proceeds from the silent auction go towards our Jim Meacham Earth Sciences Scholarship. Items have been donated by Jim Meacham, Joe Whelan, the Royal Gorge Regional Museum and many others. Bidding begins when you walk through the door and usually runs till about 6:50 pm. Come early and mingle with friends and enjoy some refreshments. Doors usually open about 5:30 pm. At 7:00 our presentation begins. Our speaker for Monday night’s meeting is Tim Brown of Frontier Nuclear and Minerals Inc. His presentation will be Geology and Mineralization in the Tallahassee Creek Uranium District here in Fremont County. Uranium mineralization in the Tallahassee Creek Uranium District has been known since the 1950s when prospectors discovered and, over the next 20 years, produced nearly 450,000 pounds of uranium. Subsequent exploration activity in the district by numerous companies has defined a total district resource of 66.0 million tons at a grade of 0.054% U3O8 containing 71.2 million pounds of uranium at a cutoff grade of 0.025% U3O8. The district has a rich geological history that has led to the uranium deposit. Precambrian basement rocks are unconformably overlain by Tertiary sediments that were deposited within the Echo Park graben. The sedimentary units were subsequently covered by andesitic flows and breccias from the Thirty-Nine Mile Volcanic field. The andesitic units were, in turn, covered by a sequence of major ash-flow tuffs that may have originated west of the district. The deposition of uranium was controlled by several factors including the presence of permeable sediments and favorable reducing environments. The Hansen deposit contains over 60% of the known uranium resources in the district where mineralization occurs as a flat-lying to gently-dipping deposit that can be over 200 feet thick. The remaining mineralization is primarily hosted in the overlying Tallahassee Creek Conglomerate where it occurs as crudely tabular, lenticular deposits in tuffaceous sediments. Tim Brown has a background that includes nearly 40 years of experience as a geologist and project manager in both greenfield and brownfield exploration projects across the United States. Mr. Brown enjoyed a 21-year career at Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mining Company. During this time, he spent 9 years as Exploration Manager and directed a team that added 6.4 million ounces of gold to the resource, including 4.1 million ounces to reserves. He also held positions as Chief Geologist, Sr. Geologist, Ore Control Geologist and Exploration Geologist. Prior to his time at Cripple Creek, he had 10 years of additional experience as an exploration geologist. More recently, Mr. Brown has worked on lithium projects in Oregon and uranium projects in Utah, Colorado and Wyoming. Mr. Brown holds a B.Sc. degree in Geology from Southern Methodist University, a M.Sc. in Geology from the University of Minnesota and an MBA from the University of Colorado. Hope to see you all there! Program list for 2026
