June 16-18 (Fri-Sun) - Victor, CO Gem and Mineral Show, at the Victor Elks Lodge, Victor, CO; see http://victorcolorado.com. The show includes at 1 p.m. Saturday a series of free presentations on “Regional Geology – Volcanoes, Fossils, and Gold”, by speakers from the BLM, Florissant Fossil Beds, and Newmont Mining.
June 22 (Thu), 7pm - Geology of Cañon City and the Gold Belt Byway with Kelsy Zabrusky of BLM John C. Fremont Library (Florence) Cañon City and the surrounding area are home to some of the most spectacular and varied geologic features in Colorado. Take a tour of the Cañon City basin and the many geologic wonders on the Gold Belt Byway. Learn how the forces of mountain building, erosion, and geologic time have shaped our unique landscape. This talk will cover some basic geologic history of the Cañon City area, including the stratigraphy (rock layers), rock types, formation of geologic features and mineral resources.
June 25 (Sun) - A geologic field trip through South Park, led by Peter Barkmann, Colorado Geological Survey. A one-day field trip sponsored by the Florissant Scientific Society; all are welcome to attend. Details are still TBA. The trip will generally follow the route of a trip Peter led during the 2016 Geological Society of America annual meeting,

July 15-16 (Sat-Sun) - The Florissant Scientific Society will hold its annual multi-day event at the Bear Basin Ranch in southern Colorado, south of Canon City. “Gary Ziegler, ranch owner and international archeologist will show us the culturally modified trees there and tell us about his work in Peru. There is a cabin where 6-8 people can bed down for the night. Campers are welcome. You can look at the Bear Basin Ranch's website to get a feel for the ranch. Fri.-Sun., July 21-24, Gold and Silver Deposits in Colorado Symposium, - a symposium cosponsored by the Friends of the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum and DREGS (Denver Region Exploration Geologists Society). “The event will feature two days of talks (July 22 - 23) and two days of field trips (July 21 and 24) to historic Colorado gold and silver mining areas.” See brochure here.

NEWS: The Rocky Mountain Federation of Mineralogical Societies (RMFMS) is now considering a proposal to hold their 2018 annual meeting in Fairplay, coincident with that show, which is scheduled for June 8-10, 2018. They would like to include some field trips, including, perhaps, one led by our Club. More information to follow.
Upcoming Science Fairs – Looking for Judges.
Judges (and other types of volunteers too) are being sought for several school, regional, and state science fairs:
The 2017 Colorado State Science & Engineering Fair “will be held on Thursday, April 6 so mark your calendars now! We need you! Grand Awards Judging is an all-day event and judges need to be in attendance at the fair from 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.” To sign up as a Grand Award Judge (that’s the name for judges for the main competition) register online at http://www.csef.colostate.edu/Judges.htm . Volunteers are also needed for numerous categories of help in addition to judging; see their website for this too.
